Q. I live in Pennsylvania. I'm a junior in high school and I would like to travel out of-state for college. However, out of-state tuition for public schools is more than it is for in-state schools. My question is, if I attended an out of-state school freshman year then got an apartment there for sophomore year-senior year, would I be able to pay in-state tuition? As long as you moved to another state for the purpose of going to college, you will never be deemed an in state resident. Also as someone else stated, you can't be in school during the time you are using to gain residency. Lots of folks make the assumption as you do, that after a year or two they will be switched to in state. This is simply NOT the case. It's pretty much a "once an out of state resident, always an out of state resident". Also note there are many more things you would have to do than simply living there.
